The Loop
A 35 minute train ride from O’Hare takes you to the Loop. Exit at
the Washington Street stop and walk one-half block east to Marshall
Field’son State Street, with Carson Pirie Scott close by.
You’ll also find the State Street Mall, an outdoor promenade that
extends nine blocks from Congress Parkway to Wacker Drive. Most
department stores and shops open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 7
p.m. The James R. Thompson Center, two blocks west of State
Street, houses specialty shops with souvenirs and works by Illinois
artists. Open weekdays, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Parking available in the
city’s underground lot on Michigan Avenue between Monroe and Adam
streets.
Magnificent Mile
The Magnificent Mile, between the 400 and 1000 blocks of North
Michigan Avenue, is filled with upscale stores and boutiques. You’ll
find bookstores, furriers, jewelry stores and galleries, plus a number
of top department stores, including Saks Fifth Avenue, Lord &
Taylor and Neiman Marcus. Most stores open daily, 10 a.m.
to 7 p.m. Parking lots available.
Chicago Place
At 700 N. Michigan Avenue, Chicago Place is anchored by Saks Fifth
Avenue and features more than 50 uncommon shops, a gourmet
grocery, Garden Food Court and more. Services include complimentary
next-day hotel delivery (within five miles). open weekdays, 10 a.m. to
7 p.m.; Saturday, until 6 p.m.; Sunday, noon to 5 p.m.
900 North Michigan Shops
Located on the Magnificent Mile, on Michigan Avenue between Walton and
Delaware, 900 North Michigan Shops is a six-story atrium with skywalks
and an oasis of more than 70 distinctive stores, first-run cinemas and
elegant to casual restaurants. Bloomingdale’s and Henri
Bendel are located here, too. Open Monday through Thursday, 10
a.m. to 7 p.m.; Friday, until 8 p.m.; Saturday, until 6 p.m.; Sunday,
noon to 6 p.m. Some establishments feature extended hours. Valet and
self parking are available.
Water Tower Place
Located on North Michigan Avenue and Chestnut Street, this beautiful
seven-story atrium mall has more than 100 stores, including Marshall
Field’s and Lord & Taylor, several restaurants and
six theaters featuring first-run movies. Open Monday through Thursday,
10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Friday, until 8 p.m.; Saturday, until 6 p.m.;
Sunday, noon to 6 p.m. Some establishments have extended hours, and
on-site parking is available.
Oak Street
Here, just one-half block south of Lake Shore Drive, is an inviting,
tree-lined walking street with vintage street lamps, historic mansions
and glittering shops filled with the best: luxurious furs, stylish
luggage and ultimate fashions — from Barneys New York to Ultimo.
Most shops open Monday through Saturday. A parking lot is located at
the corner of State and Oak streets; valet parking also available.
River North
A quick cab ride or walk from Michigan Avenue will bring you to the
River North area. Concentrated on Wells between Kinzie and Chicago
avenues is an exciting array of eclectic shops. You’ll find
antiques, Italian fashions, handmade jewelry and contemporary leather
furniture. Some of Chicago’s top models patronize the local makeup
and beauty salon. Parking provided in garage at 401 N. Wells Street.
North Pier Chicago
Chicago’s historic waterfront marketplace, located at 435 E.
Illinois Street, houses more than 50 unique dockside shops, galleries,
museums and restaurants. You’ll also find live entertainment, indoor
miniature golf, billiards, nightclubs and more. Open Monday through
Thursday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, until 10 p.m.;
Sunday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Some facilities feature extended hours.
Navy Pier
Newly renovated, this historic Chicago landmark encompasses more than
50 acres of parks, gardens, shops, restaurants and attractions. Retail
shops feature books, memorabilia, sports-themed apparel, games,
handcarved wooden accessories and more. Dining options range from
snacks to full-course gourmet cuisine. The pier is located on the
lakefront, at 600 E. Grand Avenue. Wheelchairs, strollers and bike
rentals available.
